Rangers eye title-winning weekend

Rangers boss Walter Smith is urging his side to make sure of a second successive Scottish Premier League title with a win at Hibs on Sunday.

"For a few weeks now, everybody has been telling us we are going to win the league," explained Smith.

"But this is the first weekend where we have an opportunity to do well knowing that, if we win the game, we win the championship.

"It's just a matter of keeping going in the manner we have been doing."

Victory at Easter Road would seal the championship, while anything other than a win for Celtic at Tannadice earlier in the day would allow the celebrations to begin before Rangers kick off in Edinburgh.

"We look forward to Sunday," said Smith.

"We have only lost two league games this season so the players just have to keep working away and doing what they have been doing in the lead-up to this opportunity.

"Whatever has been beforehand doesn't really count now.

"This weekend is the opportunity for us and we've got to make sure that we seize that opportunity."

Rangers were 4-1 winners on their last visit to Easter Road and swept Hibs aside 3-0 at Ibrox in February.

The home side are clinging on to fourth spot in the league, despite a dismal run of results that has seen them win just twice in their last 14 outings.

Rangers lead nearest challengers Celtic by 11 points with four games remaining and have enjoyed a comfortable cushion at the top of the table since the turn of the year.

As a result, Smith is closing in on his ninth championship in his two terms as Rangers manager without the tension of last year's final-day decider.

"Last season we were in a situation where we were chasing Celtic and we had to keep winning as much as we could whereas this season it feels as though everyone for the last five or six weeks has been telling us that we're going to win the championship," he said.

"And it's a more difficult thing to handle because when you are chasing your motivation is that you can't lose and you keep going.

"I have been a little worried that the situation would get to us and it has with a little bit of an edge coming off our game."

Rangers' season has been played out against a backdrop of economic uncertainty, with the club seeking new owners, the management team working without contracts and the future of key personnel up in the air.

However, Smith pointed out that losing star players was a reality for all Scottish clubs and not just Rangers.

"Everybody knows the situation at the moment," he added.

"What we are seeing is something that Scottish teams just have to put up with.

"For years, the Old Firm were in a situation where we could go and take players from other Scottish clubs.

"Now the English clubs are seeing that they come and take players from Scotland.

"It's just something that's happening, I don't think it's got anything particularly to do with Rangers' situation."

Smith has not bought a new player since the arrival of Maurice Edu from Toronto back in August 2008 but reports this week have linked him with Hamilton midfielder James McArthur and Dundee United striker David Goodwillie.

"I can make it quite clear to everybody," said Smith. "We don't have an opportunity to sign any players at the present moment.

"After the season finishes, we might sit down and see where the club is going to go. Any speculation that's there at the present moment is purely that."
