Li Fuyu, a rider for Lance Armstrong's Team Radioshack, has been provisionally suspended by the International Cycling Union (UCI) after failing a drugs test.
Chinese rider Li, 31, joined Radioshack in December 2009 after spells with the Discovery and Marco Polo teams.
Li tested positive for anabolic agent Clenbuterol at an in-competition test at the Dwars Door Vlaanderen race in Belgium on 23 March.
He faces a two-year ban if he is found guilty of using the banned substance.
Li still has the right to request the testing of his 'B' sample but the UCI said his suspension will remain in force until the Chinese Cycling Federation "determines whether Mr Fuyu has committed an anti-doping rule violation under Article 21 of the UCI Anti-Doping Rules".
The Radioshack team said in a statement: "Li has been immediately suspended pending the outcome of his B-sample test in the next few weeks. If that test is positive the rider will be removed from the team.
"Team RadioShack and its management take this incident very seriously. We will respect the rights of our rider but will enforce our zero-tolerance policy should his B-sample test positive."
