Federer suffers surprise Miami defeat

(CNN) -- Roger Federer suffered a surprise defeat to Czech Tomas Berdych in the fourth round of the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami.

The Swiss top seed was a long way from his best as Berdych edged a tight battle 6-4 6-7 (3-7) 7-6 (8-6).

Federer had a match point in the deciding tie-break but missed his chance with a wayward forehand, allowing Berdych to claim the victory three points later.

Federer, who won the latest of his record 16 Grand Slam singles titles at the Australian Open in January, had only lost once to Berdych in nine previous meetings.

"It's no secret I've struggled the last five matches I've played here in the States," Federer told the official ATP Tour Web site.

"I'm definitely lacking timing. I don't know where that comes from because I played so nicely in Australia. So it's disappointing to not be able to back it up."

They were joined in the quarterfinals by American Andy Roddick, who fought back from 4-1 down to defeat Germany's Benjamin Becker 7-6 (7-4) 6-3.

Fourth seed Rafael Nadal beat fellow Spaniard and 15th seed David Ferrer 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 and will next face eighth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who trounced Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain 6-2 6-2.

Fifth seed Robin Soderling of Sweden progressed with a 6-0 6-7 (3-7) 6-2 victory over Chile's Fernando Gonzalez, while Mardy Fish of the U.S. was forced to retire while trailing 6-1 1-0 against 13th seed Mikhail Youzhny.

In the women's tournament, Venus Williams advanced to the semi-finals with a 6-3 6-1 victory over Agnieszka Radwanska. She will face France's former Wimbledon finalist Marion Bartoli, who beat Yanina Wickmayer 6-4, 7-5.

Williams, who had required three sets to defeat Daniela Hantuchova in the previous round, was delighted to have had an easier ride this time around.

"Getting through a match like yesterday makes me more confident because it wasn't exactly my best game," she told the tournament's official Web site.

"Today I was kind of eager to clean up my act. We had some really good rallies and really good points, but I just see me keep coming out on top, so of course I like that."

Bayern comeback stuns Man Utd; Lyon beat Bordeaux

(CNN) -- Bayern Munich scored in injury-time to defeat Manchester United 2-1 in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final, while Lyon beat their French rivals Bordeaux 3-1.

Bayern striker Ivica Olic pounced on a mistake by United defender Patrice Evra to score the winner after the German side had equalized through a Franck Ribery free-kick.

United had taken the lead after one minute through Wayne Rooney, who hobbled off with an ankle injury just before the final whistle at the Allianz Arena.

The result gives Bayern a slight advantage going into the second leg at Old Trafford, Manchester, next Wednesday.

United, who beat Bayern in the 1999 final, got off to the perfect start when an unmarked Rooney crashed a close-range volley into the net for his 34th goal of the season.

--United manager Alex Ferguson

Rooney missed a chance to double United's lead when he broke free in the penalty area, only to prod a weak shot straight at Bayern goalkeeper Hans-Jorg Butt.

Bayern grew in strength as the game wore, with Olic failing to connect with a cross when it appeared easier to score.

The Germans gained the reward their superior football deserved after 76 minutes when Ribery's free-kick deflected off Rooney into the corner.

The game appeared to be heading towards a draw when Olic snatched the ball from Evra, cut into the box and placed his finish past Edwin Van der Sar.

"We didn't play well enough," United manager Alex Ferguson told Sky Sports. "Bayern were the better team and it's a disappointing performance possession-wise. They put in a big effort, but we're better than that."

Rooney twisted his ankle in the closing moments of the game and will be assessed on Wednesday, Ferguson said.

The striker, set to be England's spearhead at the World Cup in South Africa in June, could be a doubt for Saturday's English Premier League showdown with title rivals Chelsea, he added.

In Lyon, the home side took the lead after 10 minutes when Mathieu Bodmer's cross was turned in by Lisandro Lopez.

Bordeaux drew level four minutes later when Marouane Chamakh headed home Yoann Gourcuff's cross.

Michel Bastos restored Lyon's lead with a left-footed drive and Lisandro's penalty gave them a cushion going into next week's second leg in Bordeaux.

Semenya announces return to athletics

(CNN) -- Caster Semenya, the world 800 meters champion facing an investigation into her gender, has announced her intention to return to athletic competition this season.

"I am an athlete first and foremost and it is vital for my competitiveness, my well being and for my preparations for events during the European summer that I measure my performance against other athletes," the 19-year-old said in a statement Tuesday.

The South African has not raced since claiming the gold medal at the World Championship in Berlin last August.

The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) announced earlier this month that the inquiry into Semenya's gender had not been concluded.

Semenya stormed to victory in the Olympic Stadium last August, winning the final in one minute 55.45 seconds.

However her victory was overshadowed by revelations that she had been asked to undergo gender tests by the IAAF.

In her statement, Semenya criticized the IAAF for taking such a long time over its investigation.

"Notwithstanding my reservations about the correctness and moral integrity of the process I underwent prior to, during and after the Berlin World Championships, on the strength of the representation that I had committed no wrongdoing, I begrudgingly committed to assist the IAAF in concluding its processes which I did not agree with," she added.

"Given that I have rightfully not been disqualified nor suspended from athletics competitions and given also that I expected these processes to be expedited I, on my own volition, resolved not to compete in athletics competitions until these processes had been completed.

"Unfortunately these processes have dragged on for far too long with no reasonable certainty as to their end. The result is that my athletic capabilities and earning potential are being severely compromised."

In January, the IAAF announced that Semenya was free to run competitively, only to be contradicted by South African Olympic Committee president Gideon Sam who said she would not be permitted to compete until the IAAF had made its ruling.

In November, the South African sports ministry said Semenya was entitled to keep her gold.

Schumacher vows to improve in Malaysia

(CNN) -- Seven-time Formula One World Champion Michael Schumacher says it is too early to write him off after a disappointing start to his comeback season.

The German Mercedes driver finished tenth in the Australian Grand Prix last Sunday after coming sixth in the season-opener in Bahrain.

Despite his indifferent start, Schumacher is confident of an improvement in the Malaysian Grand Prix this Sunday.

"We are not too far away and I am quite confident there will be more to come," Schumacher wrote on his official Web site.

Schumacher finished one minute behind race winner Jenson Button and five places behind his team-mate Nico Rosberg.

"Looking into our weekend more deeply, I find we did improve quite well and have a good reason to be quite satisfied - just not from the pure result obviously.

"Going to Malaysia we know that clearly we improved our pace since Bahrain, which is a good feeling.

"It was a lot of fun fighting in Melbourne, even if it was just for one point, and I will enjoy fighting again in Sepang."

Fabregas could be fit for Barca game

(CNN) -- English Premier League team Arsenal's manager Arsene Wenger has said that captain Cesc Fabregas has a 40 per cent chance of playing against Barcelona in their European Champions League quarter-final first leg in London on Wednesday night.

The Frenchman may leave it as late as the warm-up to make a decision on whether the 22-year-old Spain midfielder will play against the 2009 winners.

Fabregas suffered severe bruising to his leg during Arsenal's 1-1 away draw at Birmingham City in the Premier League on Saturday, and is a serious doubt to play against his former club.

"He didn't appear in training because at the moment he is not fit to play," said Wenger.

"We will give ourselves 24 hours more and we will assess the situation tomorrow. I would say it is 60 against, 40 for him playing."

Fabregas was a member of the Barcelona youth team before leaving to join Arsenal in as a 16-year-old in 2003.

Maradona bitten on face by his own dog

(CNN) -- Argentina football coach Diego Maradona has undergone plastic surgery on his face after being bitten by one of his dogs.

The 49-year-old was admitted to the Sanatorio Los Arcos clinic in Buenos Aires on Monday after suffering an injury to his top lip, hospital spokesperson Izarriaga Facundo told CNN.

He is doing well after undergoing reconstructive surgery last night and will be discharged later on Tuesday, the spokesperson added.

Maradona spent several weeks in the same clinic in 2007 after developing serious health problems.

Is Messi better than Maradona?

His career has been interspersed with moments of glory and controversy.

In 1986 he scored an infamous "Hand of God" goal against England on the way to inspiring Argentina to World Cup victory.

He was suspended from football for 15 months in 1991 after failing a doping test for cocaine while playing for Napoli in Italy, and was sent home from the 1994 World Cup in the U.S. for using ephedrine.

Since retiring from playing aged 37, he has battled several health problems related to his weight, drugs and alcohol.

Maradona's Argentina side made a disappointing start to their World Cup campaign before qualifying for the finals in South Africa via a late goal against Uruguay in their last game in October.

Following the victory, Maradona unleashed an obscene tirade at journalists and was banned for two months.

Federer edges into Miami fourth round

(CNN) -- Roger Federer is through to the Sony Ericsson Open fourth round in Miami, after beating Frenchman Florent Serra in two tough tie-breaks.

The top seeded-Swiss took just over an hour-and-a-half to set up a clash with Czech Tomas Berdych -- dropping his serve three times in a disjointed performance.

"Sure, I still have to tidy up my game a bit, having had one break up in the first and two breaks up in the second; it's normally something that doesn't get away from me," Federer told the official ATP Tour Web site.

"But the most important [thing] is to come through the rounds, so I don't have a preference how it's done. It's nice to having won two breakers, because that doesn't happen every match you play."

The six seasons of the tennis year

Berdych, the 16th seed, beat Argentine Horacio Zeballos 6-4 7-5 to secure his place in the next round, while fifth seed Robin Soderling of Sweden was more impressive in a 6-1 6-2 hammering of Germany's Philipp Petzschner.

Seventh seed Marin Cilic edged out Marcos Baghdatis 6-3 6-4 while Mardy Fish -- who knocked out holder Andy Murray -- continued his fine form with a 7-5 6-3 win over Feliciano Lopez.

Meanwhile, in the women's tournament, top seed Svetlana Kuznetsova suffered a shock defeat at the hands of France's Marion Bartoli, losing in straight sets in under an hour.

Bartoli eased into the fourth round with a 6-3 6-0 victory, as Kuznetsova needed three bouts of physiotherapy on a shoulder injury.

Russian Kuznetsova told the official WTA Web site: "I suffered the injury in my first match, but it has grown steadily worse.

"I almost had stars in my eyes it was so painful. I called the physio and tried to continue playing but I think I should have pulled out earlier," added Kuznetsova.

Meanwhile, third seed Venus Williams recovered from a dismal opening set to beat Daniela Hantuchova 1-6 7-5 6-4.

Tevez hits hat-trick as Manchester City sink Wigan

(CNN) -- Carlos Tevez hit a hat-trick as Manchester City climbed into fifth in the English Premier League with a 3-0 win over Wigan.

The Argentina striker netted his three goals in just 12 second half minutes as City pressed home their advantage once Wigan's Gary Caldwell was sent off.

Caldwell's tackle on Tevez was adjudged to be a straight red card by referee Stuart Atwell, though Wigan's players argued the City striker deserved a similar punishment.

City pressed hard after the visitors were reduced to ten men but were thankful to a mistake by stand-in goalkeeper Vladimir Stojkovic for their opening goal on 72 minutes.

Patrick Vieira lofted a ball into the penalty area and as Tevez went in to challenge Stojkovic froze, allowing the ball to squirm past him, handing the forward a tap in.

Carlos is a fantastic striker and I hope he continues [scoring] in the last seven games.

Tevez got his second just two minutes later when Adam Johnson's cross was flicked on by Vincent Kompany and he finished at the back post.

The 26-year-old rounded off his hat-trick with a fine solo effort, rounding Paul Scharner before planting a shot past Stojkovic and into the far corner.

City manager Roberto Mancini told ESPN television: "It was an important win, it wasn't easy and it was difficult in the first half because Wigan played very well and there was no tempo from us.

"We played better in the second half and after the sending off it was too easy. The sending off probably changed the game. Carlos is a fantastic striker and I hope he continues (scoring) in the last seven games."

City's win lifted them into fifth place, two points behind Tottenham, who occupy the final Champions League qualification spot.

Wigan remain in trouble at the foot of the table, just two places above the relegation zone.

Els retains Arnold Palmer Invitational title

Ernie Els survived some nervy moments to secure his second successive Arnold Palmer Invitational title in Orlando on Monday.

The South African's charge for the trophy was halted by bad weather on Sunday night, forcing play to be abandoned when he was leading by two shots with four holes left.

Els recorded four pars to end his round on a total of 277 (-11) but had to rely on his powers of recovery to avoid dropping shots on the sodden course.

He sank an important putt on 15 to save his par before putting his drive on the following hole into the trees. He regained control to prevent dropping a shot before chipping out of a difficult lie on 17 to make another par.

American Kevin Na cut Els' lead to just one stroke on the 16th hole but his hopes ended when he left his par putt short on 18.

It was a tough finish for me," Els told reporters. "I've been thinking about these last four holes for 22 hours so it was nice to finally get on the golf course.

"I kind of limped home but the work I have put in has started paying off, and obviously my short game is good. I got it up and down the last two holes."

Els claimed the WGC-CA Championship in his last outing and heads into the year's first major, the Masters at Augusta in early April, in good shape.
